Color steel plate (color coated steel plate) by virtue of its lightweight and high strength, beautiful and durable, convenient construction, economic and practical advantages, widely used in industrial workshops, warehouses, activity boarding house, commercial building enclosure, purification workshop, cold storage and other fields. In the scenarios of color steel plate installation, sandwich panel production, local repair or heat preservation layer lamination, it is crucial to realize the firm, sealed and durable connection between color steel plate and itself (lap joint), other color steel plates, heat preservation materials (e.g. XPS/EPS/rockwool), and grass-roots level (e.g. purlin, concrete). Polyurethane adhesive with its excellent comprehensive performance, become one of the preferred materials for color steel plate adhesive sealing.

The core advantages of polyurethane adhesive in color steel plate bonding:

Strong bonding strength and wide applicability:

Can strongly bond color steel plate (including galvanized substrate, aluminum zinc plated substrate and polyester/silicone modified polyester/PVDF and other coatings on it) with itself, other metals, many kinds of heat preservation materials (XPS, EPS, rockwool), concrete, timber and so on.

Provides high shear strength and peel strength to resist stresses from wind loads, vibrations and structural deformation.

Excellent elasticity and displacement following ability:

Forms a tough and elastic adhesive layer after curing, which is its greatest advantage over rigid adhesives (e.g. welding, riveting, partial epoxy adhesive).

It can effectively absorb and compensate for the significant thermal expansion and contraction displacement of the color steel plate due to the temperature difference between day and night and seasonal changes, as well as the slight settlement or deformation that may occur in the building structure, which greatly reduces the risk of cracking and debonding of the joints, and guarantees the long-term sealing.

Excellent weatherability and environmental resistance:

Wide Temperature Stability: Maintains good performance in temperatures ranging from -40°C to +90°C and even higher, does not become brittle in the cold, does not flow or soften at high temperatures, and adapts to a wide range of climatic conditions.

Excellent UV and aging resistance: Resistant to chalking, cracking and performance degradation caused by prolonged exposure to sunlight, ensuring long-term effectiveness of exposed seams (high-quality products are usually designed for long-term outdoor exposure).

Resistance to water, humidity and corrosion: Effectively prevents substrate rust and adhesive failure caused by moisture penetration, especially in rainy, high humidity or coastal salt spray environments.

Good chemical resistance: It has a certain resistance to common acid rain, weak alkali, grease, etc.

Excellent sealing performance:

After curing, it forms a continuous, dense, seamless elastic adhesive layer, which can effectively block the infiltration of rain, air and dust, and is the key to realize reliable waterproofing, airtightness and soundproofing of the color steel plate system (especially the joints of roof and wall).

Construction is convenient and efficient:

Single-component products mostly (there are also two-component), open the can (tube) that is used, usually use the glue gun for sizing, simple operation.

Thixotropy is good, not easy to flow when applying glue on the surface, easy to mold.

Open time (surface drying time) is moderate, allowing adjustment and trimming.

Curing speed is relatively fast (affected by temperature and humidity), which can improve the construction efficiency.

Environmentally friendly and safe:

Modern high-quality polyurethane sealant/adhesive generally meets the requirements of low VOC, solvent-free (or less solvent) environmental protection (e.g. GB/T 14683, GB 18583, EU CE, etc.), and is non-toxic and odorless after curing.

Good flame retardant properties (usually up to class B or higher), to meet the requirements of the building fire.

Typical application scenarios:

Color steel roof and wall system:

Longitudinal/horizontal lap joint sealing and bonding: Overlap area between roof and wall panels, providing waterproofing and structural bonding.

Sealing of roof ridge, gable, mountain wall cladding: Sealing of connection with edge trimming.

Sealing at the junction of light strips and color steel panels: to prevent water leakage.

Sealing around penetrations (e.g. pipes, fan bases): critical waterproofing nodes.

Sealing of gutter joints: Ensure the watertightness of the gutter system.

Color steel sandwich panel production:

Bonding the color steel panel to the core material (polyurethane/PIR, rock wool, glass wool, EPS/XPS) is a key process in sandwich panel molding, requiring high strength and durability.

On-site installation and repair:

Fix the insulation layer (e.g. XPS/EPS/rock wool board) on the inside of color steel plate (e.g. for cold storage wall).

Local adhesive fixing of color steel plate and purlin or other supporting structure (often with mechanical fixing).

Repair and sealing of broken color steel plate, hole, lap joint failure.

The sealing between the door and window opening and the color steel plate wall.

Movable Panel House:

Splicing and edging sealing bonding of wall panels and roof panels, fast erection and air and water tightness guaranteed.

Purification project:

Clean room color steel plate wall plate, roof plate seam sealing, to meet the high cleanliness requirements of air tightness.

Color steel plate bonding construction key points:

Substrate surface treatment (vital!) Clean: Thoroughly remove the bonding area:

Clean: Thoroughly remove oil, dust, rust, mold release agent, old coating (loose part), water vapor, frost and snow in the bonding area. It is standard practice to wipe with a special cleaning solvent (e.g. Isopropyl Alcohol, Acetone) and always allow the solvent to evaporate completely before applying glue.

Rust Removal: If rust is present, it must be sanded to a metallic sheen (ST2 or ST3 grade).

COATING COMPATIBILITY: Verify that the polyurethane adhesive is compatible with the surface coating of the colored steel. Most high quality products will work with common coatings, but special coatings (such as some silicone or fluoride based coatings) should be tested or consulted with the supplier.

Sanding (optional but recommended): For smooth coated surfaces, light sanding (e.g. with fine sandpaper) can significantly improve mechanical bite and bond strength.

Seam design and backing material:

Joint Width and Depth: Design joints to a reasonable size based on expected displacement (thermal expansion and contraction), construction tolerances, and the adhesive’s displacement capacity (width/depth ratios of 1:1 or 2:1 are usually recommended). Refer to adhesive manufacturer’s technical data.

Backing material: For deeper joints (typically >10mm) or where controlled adhesive thickness is required, closed cell polyethylene foam rods (backing rods) must be used to fill the bottom. Function: To control the depth of application, save glue, prevent three-sided bonding (resulting in stress concentrations that are prone to cracking), and provide uniform support.

Glue application process:

Tools: Use the appropriate glue gun (manual, pneumatic, electric) to ensure smooth and even glue. Use different caliber nozzles as needed.

Technique: Keep the nozzle at an angle of 45° to the substrate and move at a suitable speed to ensure that the glue strip is continuous, full and even to fill the joints and make full contact with the substrate on both sides. Avoid glue breaks, air bubbles or air entrapment. For lap joints, the adhesive is usually applied to the lap edge of the board below.

Dosage: Ensure sufficient amount of glue, especially when bonding thermal insulation materials, often using the point frame method (continuous adhesive strips around the perimeter + dotted adhesive dots in the middle) or strip bonding method, to ensure an effective bonding area.

Trimming and maintenance:

Trimming (tool scraping): Before the glue surface dry (specific time to see the product description), can be used to special scraper or soapy water dipped scraper will glue surface scraping and compaction, so that it and the substrate close to the formation of smooth and beautiful surface, but also conducive to drainage and weathering. Especially important for exposed joints.

CARE: Until the adhesive is fully cured (usually takes 24-72 hours to reach initial strength, full cure may take 7-14 days or longer), avoid contact with water, violent deformation, heavy objects or bearing loads. Keep the environment well ventilated. The higher the temperature and moderate humidity (ideal range is usually 40%-60% RH), the faster the curing; low temperatures and high humidity will significantly slow down the curing.

Safety and Protection:

Maintain ventilation during construction.

Wear gloves and goggles to avoid skin and eye contact with uncured adhesive.

Handle and store according to Safety Data Sheet (SDS) requirements.

Summarize:

Polyurethane adhesive/sealant is one of the core materials for reliable connections, durable seals and long term durability of color steel panel systems. With its unparalleled elastic deformation ability, strong bonding strength, excellent weather resistance and convenient construction performance, it perfectly solves the joint challenges brought about by the thermal expansion and contraction of color steel sheets, ensuring the watertightness, airtightness and overall performance of the building envelope. Whether it is the roof joints of large-scale industrial factory buildings, the production of sandwich panels, or the quick erection or on-site repair of movable rooms, choosing high-quality polyurethane adhesive that meets the requirements of the application environment, and strictly following the construction process including thorough surface treatment, correct joint design, standardized glue application and adequate maintenance is the key to guaranteeing the quality of color steel sheet projects and prolonging their service life.
